Discover how the talented team at BDI Lab can support your project and bring your product ideas to life. We specialise in not only developing products, but also the best strategy to benefit your launch and ongoing business. Our in house artists & designers are well versed at starting the product design process with creative sketch rounds. We develop a wide range of lo-fi concepts and hold focus groups to ensure the problem and solution are fully understood before we start investing time in detailed design.
What Is product design?
Product design is the process of identifying a market opportunity, clearly defining the problem, developing a proper solution for that problem and validating the solution with real users.
Design thinking is a method for the practical resolution of problems. It has become a popular approach to creating products.
Design thinking is a human-centered approach to innovation that draws from the designer’s toolkit to integrate the needs of people, the possibilities of technology and the requirements for business success.
Good designers have always applied design thinking to product design (whether physical or digital) because it’s focused on end-to-end product development, and not just the “design phase” part.
Below is an outline of the areas in product development we are well versed in supporting.

High Accuracy
Reverse
Engineering
Motorsport engineering has always been at the core of BDI Precision's skill set. We were contacted by members of the BRSCC & MSA to optimise various components within the stringent rules and regulations of their competitions. We used our knowledge of reverse engineering to optimise parts for weight and flow. An example of an area where we were able to reduce vehicle weight and increase engine power output was in the high flow performance exhaust manifold we developed. Welded from the highest quality, hardest wearing aircraft grade T304 steel these performance exhaust are a must for front runners. This process of re-engineering parts can be applied to any standard exhaust manifold to produce significant gains in power.
Going beyond the drawing board we use computational models to analyse and optimise our designs. The use of software allows us to save material, time and cost in the product development process. We can ensure parts will be up to the job before we even finish the design process and we do this with unprecedented accuracy.
Using a wide range of CAD software allows us to take on the most challenging reverse engineering and sculptural CAD design challenges. These models can then be used to reproduce highly detailed parts by a number of production techniques. If you need NURBS data or you want to develop some specific geometry from your scan data we are very happy to help with that too.

Merging design, technology, style and comfort in a totally new way, Quintessence Yachts has encapsulated the best of all worlds in the stunning new AM37 powerboat.
Since it's inception BDI Lab has supported Quintessence Yachts & Aston Martin with the creation of the AM37.
Every once in a while, something radically different from the norm is introduced to the world which alters people’s perceptions. In the powerboat industry this game-changing moment has now arrived as earth meets water in the most spectacular way imaginable.
Our in house artists & designers are well versed at starting the product design process with creative sketch rounds. We develop a wide range of lo-fi concepts and hold focus groups to ensure the problem and solution are fully understood before we start investing time in detailed design.
Using a wide range of CAD software and digital sketching tools allows us to take on the most difficult design & engineering challenges. We have produced industry leading technical solutions to some of the world most difficult problems. Our experts have experience of analysing airflow around a drone in-flight and the stress applied to a cycle helmet during a crash. All of this knowledge and understanding means we can get the best possible solution to your particular product idea.
The AM37 powerboats combine the highest degree of technology and innovation in a unique manner that is sure to delight those who seek the best sports car features in a luxury powerboat. The design revolves around more than style alone. A holistic approach to weight distribution and balance combine with the high-tech composite materials used in the construction of the stepped hull to provide the type of comfort Aston Martin car owners expect.

Fluid dynamics &
finite element analysis
Using the latest software tools we can simulate your entire product assembly and all the interactions between parts. We can analyse how much material is needed in specific areas and optimise parts for weight. We also have the ability to analyse fluid flow, we have done this around multiple blades and wing elements simultaneously leading to complete system optimisation.
Going beyond the drawing board we use computational models to analyse and optimise our designs. The use of software allows us to save material, time and cost in the product development process. We can ensure parts will be up to the job before we even finish the design process and we do this with stunning accuracy.
BDI Lab has exactly the right digital tools for the job, and we really know how to use them. We have tested hundreds of structures and generated dozens of wing profiles whilst developing industry leading products for some of the world's foremost product brands.
Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is a branch of fluid mechanics that uses numerical analysis and data structures to analyze and solve problems that involve fluid flows. The mathematical model varies in accordance with the content of the problem such as heat transfer, mass transfer, phase change, chemical reaction, etc. Moreover, the reliability of a CFD analysis highly depends on the whole structure of the process. The verification of the mathematical model is extremely important to create an accurate case for solving the problem. Besides, the determination of proper numerical methods to generate a path through the solution is as important as a mathematical model.
Finite element analysis (FEA) is a computerized method for predicting how a product reacts to real-world forces, vibration, heat, fluid flow, and other physical effects. Finite element analysis shows whether a product will break, wear out, or work the way it was designed. It is called analysis, but in the product development process, it is used to predict what is going to happen when the product is used. FEA works by breaking down a real object into a large number (thousands to hundreds of thousands) of finite elements, such as little cubes. Mathematical equations help predict the behavior of each element.
